Technology Transfer for Fishery Development
Project Overview
Shellfish processors and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) wanted to explore the feasibility of developing a commercial fishery for squid, an underutilized U.S. fishery resource. Japanese export markets were the target sector.
Aquabio's Role
- Assessed available technology in Japan
- Assessed international demand
- Led technology transfer for fishery development effort to evaluate and acquire Japanese harvesting and processing equipment
- Identified Japanese and other East Asian markets for squid
- Identified interim processing approach needed to avoid prohibitive tariffs
Results
- Aquabio verified that our client could reduce import tariffs and shipping costs by semi-processing squid domestically
- Technology transfer enabled the development of export markets in Japan
